Whenever I find myself with a little extra time, I head straight to the kitchen to make a batch of sweet, fluffy dinner rolls for my kids. I may call them “dinner rolls,” but in our home, they’re perfect for any time of day — after school, alongside supper, or warm with butter as a cozy evening treat.
There’s something so special about the process. The quiet mixing, the gentle kneading, the patience of waiting for the dough to rise. The kitchen slowly fills with that soft, buttery sweetness, wrapping around us like comfort. Baking has always been my love language — a simple way to care for my family in the middle of busy days.
When the rolls come out of the oven, golden and glossy on top, my children’s excitement makes every minute worth it. Watching them pull one apart while it’s still warm, steam rising, butter melting into every fluffy layer — that joy is everything.
For me, baking isn’t just about bread. It’s about creating memories, filling our home with warmth, and giving my family something made with love.
Sweet and Fluffy Dinner Rolls
Makes 12 rolls
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup bread flour
- 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 egg room temp
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup butter softened
In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, sugar, yeast, and egg. Add both flours and salt. Mix until you get a shaggy dough and then add the softened butter. Knead the dough until it comes together and becomes smooth and cover and let it rest until doubled in size. If your home is warm it can rise quickly in about one hour.
Transfer the dough to a clean surface. Cut it evenly into 12 pieces. Flatten each piece of dough and pinch the edges together to form a ball. Roll them until they’re smooth, and then place in a single layer in a buttered 9 x 9-inch baking dish. Cover the baking dish with a clean dish towel and place it on top of the stove top to rise again. While it rests, preheats the oven to 350°F.
Brush the rolls with milk and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown on top. Once done quickly brush the top with butter for a shiny finish and enjoy!
Helpful tips!!
You can use all all-purpose flour, make it diary free with oat milk and diary free butter. Don’t like sugar, use the same amount of honey or maple syrup. I make these with salted butter but have also used unsalted and get the same results.
